A half-hour later, Caina and Kylon climbed the stairs to their guest room in the Palace of the Princes. Nasser had invited them to dinner, and Caina wanted to change clothes before they ate. It had been a hot day in Iramis, and she had sweated more than she had expected. Her riding dress was starting to smell a bit ripe.

Their room occupied the highest chamber of the tower, and the others had guest rooms in the lower levels. Nadezhda and Strato occupied the lowest room, and Caina suspected that a seset-medjar would have a hard time forcing his way past them.

At least, she hoped so. Caina hated the thought of anyone getting hurt on her account. She knew the blame ultimately lay with the traitor who commanded the assassin, but she would still rebuke herself.

“Do you think Ilona will go back to Ulkaar with Nadezhda?” said Kylon as they approached the door to their bedchamber.

“Yes,” said Caina. “She is Ulkaari to her bones. And she always took her duty as the Bronze Witch seriously.”

“Which is why she lied to us about who she really was,” said Kylon.

“She didn’t lie,” said Caina. “She just didn’t share the whole truth. There is a difference.” Kylon’s snort shared his opinion without the need for words. “She learned a hard lesson from that.”

“Perhaps,” said Kylon, stepping to the door. “A pity that hard lesson let Talmania walk off with the Diadem.”

“I know that Ilona will go,” said Caina. “I just hope it doesn’t break Seb’s heart. He really loves her.”

“He could do better,” said Kylon, opening the door and looking around the room. The bedroom was empty, the furnishings unchanged. Caina eyed the bed, remembered the night that she and Kylon had spent in it, and smiled to herself. Their wedding night had indeed been interrupted…but Caina supposed it would take three or four more nights to make up for it properly.

She was pretty sure that she could persuade Kylon of that.

“Some have said the same of you, husband,” said Caina, following him into the bedroom.

“If any man was foolish enough to say it in front of me, I would tell him to shut up if he didn’t want a broken jaw,” said Kylon, turning back to face her.

“You say such sweet things,” said Caina.

She draped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him long and hard.

“I thought you wanted to rest before dinner,” murmured Kylon.

“I wanted to sleep,” said Caina. “With you. Together. When I say I want to sleep with you, do you understand that sleep will not be involved?”

“If you’re tired now,” said Kylon, a little growl starting to come into his voice, “wait until I’m done with you.”

Caina grinned and stepped back, intending to take off her clothes in front of him. Then her brain caught up with her body and pointed out that the bedroom door was still standing open. Any servant who wandered by would see more than he expected. Or, worse, Morgant would happen to come upstairs, and she would never hear the end of it.
